Separable vs inseparable phrasal verbs

Beberapa phrasal verb bisa dipisahkan oleh objeknya, sebagian lagi tidak bisa.

Separable (objek bisa di tengah atau di akhir)

  • Turn off the light. / Turn the light off. (keduanya benar)
  • Kalau objeknya kata ganti (it, him, her...), objek harus di tengah: Turn it off. (bukan "Turn off it")

Inseparable (objek harus di akhir, tidak bisa dipisah)

  • Look after the kids. (bukan "Look the kids after")
  • I ran into her. (bukan "I ran her into")

Kesalahan umum

  • ❌ "Turn off it." → ✅ "Turn it off." (objek kata ganti harus di tengah untuk phrasal verb separable)
  • ❌ "I look after for my sister's cat." → ✅ "I look after my sister's cat." (look after sudah lengkap, tanpa "for")
  • ❌ "She gave up to smoke." → ✅ "She gave up smoking." (give up diikuti gerund, bukan infinitive)

Phrasal verb paling baik dipelajari sedikit demi sedikit, dalam konteks kalimat lengkap — daripada menghafal daftar terpisah dari maknanya.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is "Turn off it." incorrect?

The correct form is "Turn it off." A pronoun object must go in the middle of a separable phrasal verb.

What's the correct way to say "I look after for my sister's cat."?

The correct form is "I look after my sister's cat." Look after is already complete, no "for" needed.

Is it correct to say "She gave up to smoke."?

The correct form is "She gave up smoking." Give up is followed by a gerund, not an infinitive.
