Penjelasan To Be: Kapan Memakai Am, Is, dan Are

To be adalah kata kerja paling penting dan paling sering dipakai dalam bahasa Inggris. Kata kerja ini punya tiga bentuk di present tense: am, is, are.

I am a student.

Dalam percakapan sehari-hari, bentuk ini biasanya disingkat:

• I am → I'm
• she is → she's
• they are → they're

Untuk apa to be dipakai

1. Mendeskripsikan identitas atau pekerjaan

• I am a teacher.
• He is my brother.

2. Mendeskripsikan sifat atau kondisi

• The weather is cold today.
• We are excited about the trip.

3. Menyebutkan lokasi

• The keys are on the table.
• She is at home.

4. Menyebutkan usia (bahasa Inggris memakai to be, bukan "have" seperti bahasa Indonesia)

• I am 25 years old. (bukan "I have 25 years")

Bentuk negatif dan pertanyaan

Berbeda dari kata kerja lain, to be tidak memakai do/does untuk negatif atau pertanyaan — subjek dan to be cukup dibalik atau ditambah "not".

• I am not ready. (am not, tidak ada singkatan resmi)
• She is not (isn't) here.
• They are not (aren't) coming.
• Is he your friend?
• Are you ready?

Kesalahan umum

• ❌ "I is happy." → ✅ "I am happy."
• ❌ "She have 20 years old." → ✅ "She is 20 years old."
• ❌ "They is my friends." → ✅ "They are my friends."
• ❌ "He don't is here." → ✅ "He isn't here." (to be tidak pernah dipakai bersama do/does)

Kuasai am/is/are lebih dulu — hampir semua kalimat deskriptif dalam bahasa Inggris bergantung padanya.
